The Sognefjord area

Inner part of the Sognefjord area includes the communities Luster, Sogndal, Årdal, Lærdal, Aurland, Vik, Balestrand and Leikanger. The region has been an international destination for tourists, painters, explorers, kings and emperors from all over the world. Below we listed some of the many, many offers the area has outside Fjærland.

Jølster

Skei is the centre in Jølster and is situated 31 km north of Fjærland. Below we listed some of the many offers the area has.

Nordfjord

Sunnfjord

Førde is the centre in Sunnfjord and is situated 80 km north of Fjærland. Below we listed some of the many offers the area has.

The west coast

Florø is the centre of the West Coast area and is situated 130 km northwest of Fjærland. Below we listed some of the many offers the area has.

Day trips from Fjærland by car

1. Fjærland - Skei - Sandane - Hyen - Førde - Astruptunet - Fjærland (220 km)

Follow route 5 to Skei. Vikens vevstue in Skei is worth visiting. The shop is filled up with woven carpets, handicraft, souvenirs and there even is a Christmas shop where you can buy Christmas decorations.
Continue on E 39 to Byrkjelo and Sandane. In Sandane you find Nordfjord Folkemuseum - showing the daily life in the area 150 years ago.
From Sandane you follow route 615 to Hyen and its art galleries and further on to Førde.
After Hyen you drive through an unspoilt landscape with lakes and rivers.
Førde is one of the counties to cities and a shopping centre.
From Førde follow E 39 to Vassenden (19 km) where you turn right towards Astruptunet. Astruptunet farm is the native place of the Norwegian painter Nicolai Astrup. Continue to route 5 and further on to Fjærland.

2. Fjærland - Sogndal - Urnes stave church - Skjolden - Sogndal - Fjærland (160 km)

You can either take the ferry 10.10 to Hella (arrival 11.15) and go further on to Sogndal or you take route 5 from Fjærland to Sogndal. From Sogndal you follow route 55 towards Gaupne/Lom. Shortly before Hafslo turn right to Solvorn and take the ferry to Urnes and the stave church. The church is the oldest one in Norway (built 1132) and it is on UNECO's world heritage list.
Continue towards Skjolden. Stop by Feigumfossen, a 218 m high waterfall. Short walk to the waterfall.
Continue from Skjolden to Luster (10 km) where you find Dale stone church from the 12th century, built in gothic style. Then further on to Sogndal and Fjærland. 20 km from Sogndal you can turn right and visit the goat farm Anestølen.

3. Fjærland - Balestrand - mount Gaularfjellet - Astruptunet - Fjærland (155 km)

Ferry to Balestrand 10.10 with arrival 11.40. Heritage trail in Balestrand. Contact Tourist Office. From Balestrand road no. 13 towards Moskog/Førde, over mount Gaularfjellet (750 m a.s.l.). Some kilometers after summit, at Hov hyttegrend, you find Fossestien - a trail alongside the waterfalls of the river Gaula.
At Moskog you follow E 39 towards Skei. After 9 km, at Vassenden, turn right towards Astruptunet. Astruptunet farm is the native place of the Norwegian painter Nicolai Astrup.
Drive further on to road no. 5. Vikens vevstue in Skei is worth visiting. The shop is filled up with woven carpets, handicraft, souvenirs and there even is a Christmas shop where you can buy Christmas decorations. The distance from Skei to Fjærland is 31 km.
